Ridgewood

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

For the second year in a row, we're going to play a benefit concert for the Nick Currey Fund for Ewings sarcoma research in our hometown of Ridgewood, NJ.  This year we're honored to say we'll be joined by The Glenn Mercer Band.  Glenn is the singer and guitarist of one of the greatest indie bands of all time, and certainly the greatest band ever to hail from Bergen County, The Feelies.  This will surely be a beautiful night of indie rock in the early summer suburbs.

The show will be held June 30th at the Kasschau Memorial Shell in Veteran's Field (located behind Village Hall and the Library).  It starts at 6 o'clock with guitarist and singer Brian Milligram.

Advance tickets/donations can be purchased here.

If you pay $20 in advance via that link, you get a seat and you get entered into drawings for sweet prizes.  If you pay $30, you get the above plus a t-shirt.  The show is open to the public though, so feel free to show up with a blanket or lawn chairs and make a donation when you get there.

This show is being sponsored by Real Living Gateway Realtors and more information can be found on their website over here.

Benefit Show in Ridgewood!

Here's some more information about the show:

Concert is FREE but a donation in any amount would be most appreciated. Those making a $15 dollar advance donation will have access to a VIP section and will be entered into a free drawing to be held at the event. Prizes include Autographed Real Estate CD’s and other Items.

And here's some information about the Fund:

In 2005, 19-year-old Nick Currey of Ridgewood, New Jersey, lost his life to Ewing sarcoma, a cancer of the bone (and at times soft tissue) that develops in young people.   Nick’s parents, Nancy and Ralph Currey, established the Nick Currey Fund in his memory to support research that will speed the day when no young person’s life is cut short by Ewing sarcoma.

Nick survived leukemia as a child (he was treated between the ages of four and six) only to succumb to Ewing sarcoma as a young adult.  Being a leukemia survivor may well have caused Nick to develop Ewing sarcoma.  Childhood cancer survivors are nine times more likely than the general population to develop a sarcoma.  In addition, the lifetime dosages of chemotherapy Nick received directly contributed to his death.  His body could not survive the intense chemotherapy associated with the autologous stem cell transplant that was his last, best hope.  If more targeted, less toxic therapies had been available, Nick might be alive today.

While survival rates for childhood cancer have shown impressive improvement, those statistics only capture patients who survive five or 10 years.  They do not reflect the survivors like Nick who suffer an early death from secondary cancers or devastating long-term side effects such as heart disease that result from the toxicity of current therapies.  The Nick Currey Fund is dedicated to finding new and improved therapies for Ewing sarcoma that either represent a real cure or are less toxic than conventional chemotherapy.
